Meanwhile, after 52 years in Amsterdam, my wife and I, Loes and Ferry, moved to Almere Buiten in May 2008. We live, still completely independent like before, in a home of the Nusantara Foundation and the complex we live in is called Rumah Melati. The majority of the people in our complex are East Indian, apart from a couple of Surinam, Ambonese descent and even a Turkish man (married to an East Indian girl) and some fully Dutch people who were either born in the Indies or who lived there for many years. The advantage of being here is that there are doctors, dentists, a pharmacy and nursing staff associated with our community, so everything is close at hand if one were to become needy at some stage. Those who have their own transport and are able to get around can of course stay with their previous doctor and dentist if they prefer. We have an East Indian “Toko Asmara” in the building itself and every month a kumpulan (gathering) is organised for those who are interested, with East Indian food and drinks and even including an afternoon of playing bingo. For the solitary elderly among us - and there are quite a number of them - there are seats in the common room and also in the foyer of the complex, where they can meet and chat about long-forgotten stories. There is even a coffee and tea machine, so the catering part is looked after as well. Their children visit at regular intervals or come and pick them up by car to take them shopping or whatever. The foyer of our complex, as well as the common room, has been decorated with greens and on the walls you’ll find various paintings of “Our Indies”, which the people living in Nusantara have donated for this purpose.

Many of us have a special card from the municipal authorities to get to, for instance Almere-Stad, to do some shopping or to visit a doctor. The bus or taxi generally arrives within an hour of calling and they charge € 1.35 one way; passengers are picked up and dropped off along the way, the route taken depending on where they live. In short, we still live fully independently, but all services are close at hand, in case we might need them now or later.

With this, I would like to conclude the story of my colourful life.
